Now look what I’ve started … no, not a whole new dance craze – just a whole new show ABOUT the dance crazes of the 1960s.  It’s Part 2 of our 3-part series on ‘Dancing Through the Decades’. I started the feature with last Sunday’s Part 1 – major dances of the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s; from The Charleston to The Stroll, Mambo and Hand-Jive.  This Sunday, we dive right into the dance mania Chubby Checker’s Twist started in 1960 … inspiring dozens of weird and wonderful dances with various hit songs to drive us onto the dance-floor. Remember The Pony, Mashed Potato, Locomotion and Monkey ?  Those are just a few of the dances we’ll remember this Sunday afternoon.
I’ll also have a fascinating ‘triple play’ after the 3 o’clock news featuring the final songs Buddy Holly recorded 60 years ago this week; these last songs were quite a departure from the rock’n’roll sounds of ‘Peggy Sue’ and ‘That’ll be the Day’ – they pointed toward what may have been a fascinating evolution in the career of one of rock’n’roll’s most prolific pioneers. Sadly we’ll never know, because Buddy died in a plane crash a few months later. It’ll be good to hear those final recordings again.
So please join me for all this great music on ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday (Oct.21) at 2, on Zoomer Radio.
