WHAT ARE EXPERTS SAYING ABOUT OTTAWA’S NEW COVID-19 APP? AUGUST 5 2020

Libby Znaimer is joined by Carmi Levy, a technology analyst and journalist based in London, Ontario and Dr. Ray Deonandan, an Epidemiologist and Associate Professor in the faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa.

In the news: Ottawa launches a COVID-19 contact tracing app called “COVID Alert”. But, just how effective is this going to be? The app is already raising privacy and security concerns with a number of Canadians and experts are suggesting that the technology poses accessibility challenges for some seniors and marginalized groups. Also, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, is cautioning Canadians that a COVID-19 vaccine is not going to be a “magic bullet” that makes everything go back to normal again. Social distancing and mask wearing will likely be in place for the next few years to come. Our experts weigh in.
