SYRIAN RESTAURANT CLOSES AMIDST DEATH THREATS – OCTOBER 9 2019

Soufi’s, a downtown Toronto restaurant founded by the Alsoufi family, which has been widely hailed as a success story of Canada’s refugee resettlement program, abruptly closed on Tuesday amidst escalating online attacks.

Alaa Alsoufi attended a political protest in Hamilton wearing a face mask at a fundraiser with Maxime Bernier for the People’s Party of Canada at Mohawk College.

Less than 24 hours later, a Twitter user in Ottawa identified Alsoufi as a Syrian “terrorist” who reportedly harassed an elderly woman as she approached the event.

Guest host Jane Brown is joined by Bayan Khatib, Executive Director, of the Syrian Canadian Foundation, and Neethan Shan, Interim Executive Director of the Urban Alliance on Race Relations, to discuss the controversy surrounding this issue.
