Born on this day in 1935, showman Johnny Mathis, who was almost lured into the opera world prior to his success. Taking inspiration from the smoother crossover jazz vocalists of the 40s like Nat King Cole and Lena Horne, Mathis has taken his career from romantic standards to jazz, traditional pop, Broadway, country and even a few disco songs for his album Mathis Magic.
