There has been a devastating commuter collision in the nation’s capital. Police in Ottawa say six people, 5 passengers and the bus driver, were killed in a collision involving a VIA Rail train and a city transit bus. Pictures from the scene show the front end of the double decker articulated bus was torn off.
A witness to the crash says a car had stopped for the train at a rail crossing but the bus just kept on going. The witness says the driver must have lost his brakes — or had an attack.
Rescue workers are working on the mangled wreckage of the bus. Steve Robinson is with Ontario’s Air Ambulance service ORNGE. He tells CP 24, “we’ve dispatched our local land ambulance to Queensway Carleton Hospital to be ready to receive patients. That’s the closest hospital to the scene. We’ll be able to transfer patients to Ottawa Civic and then of course, our Toronto helicopter is on the way now and will be able to assist in the scene.”
The collision occurred just outside a suburban train station in Ottawa’s west end in the middle of the morning commute.
