Mayor Rob Ford is holding out hope that plastic bags will not be banned in Toronto.
City Council voted yesterday not to re-open debate on the issue that would see plastic bags banned on January first. Ford says the matter will now go to the Public Works Committee, and he hopes committee members will send the issue back to council for another vote.
Ford maintains the majority of Toronto residents want plastic bags. But David Shiner, who introduced the motion banning plastic, says he only received eight phone calls asking him to re-consider.
Council will continue meeting today. They will hear from Ombudsman Fiona Crean on her report that criticizes Mayor Ford’s office over civic appointments. Councillors will also debate the future of the Toronto Zoo.
