Toronto City Council has officially approved the legal agreement with the province’s transit agency, Metrolinx, to build four light rail transit routes in Toronto.
But not without a last-minute attempt to delay the project by Mayor Rob Ford and his allies on council.
The $8.4-billion dollar deal will see the construction of LRTs on Eglinton, Sheppard, and Finch, along with the Scarborough RT. The province will pay for the routes.
Ford made a final appeal to stop the project. He says the people of Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough want subways.
Ford actually missed part of the debate because he was coaching his high school football team.
TTC Chair Karen Stintz says, if the deal had been delayed, there was a good chance the province would pull the funding.
From now on, the projects will be in the hands of the provincial transit agency, Metrolinx.
