A documentary on the late reclusive author J.D. Salinger that premiered earlier this month with much hype at the Toronto International Film Festival has gone back to the drawing board.

In the face of less-than-stellar reviews in the US, producer Harvey Weinstein has taken the unprecedented step of issuing a new version of the film.

Thirteen minutes have been cut from the original two-hour film, and another eight minutes added after critics took issue with some aspects of the original release…..especially the dramatic music and re-enactments.

The Hollywood Reporter says it’s “virtually unheard-of for a movie to be altered when it’s already in theatres.”

Weinstein appears convinced that the film has the potential to be an international hit. He is also producing a biopic on the author’s life.
