MP PENSION CHANGE APPROVAL OPENS DEBATE ON OMNIMBUS BILL

Opposition M-Ps want to know why if the government was okay with separating the pension from its omnibus budget bill — more portions of the bill can’t be split off.

Speedy negotiations saw the pension changes removed from the bill and unanimously passed through the House of Commons without any further study.

The New Democrats and Liberals say that contradicts claims by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty that the omnibus bill cannot be broken apart.

The alterations to the M-P pension program sharply increase the contributions M-Ps must make to their pensions and makes them wait until age 65 to collect.
