HOSPITAL BED WARNING COULD SAVE LIVES

This will provide some comfort to families of older people spending time in the hospital.  A warning has been issued by Health Canada to hospitals and other healthcare facilities about the risk of patients getting trapped in their hospital beds.

The agency wants authorities to scrutinize older-model beds manufactured before 2000 because they could cause fatal injuries.

Health Canada’s advisory says since 2009, there have been 12 reports of patients becoming trapped in their beds — and three of them died.

One such incident involved a patient getting trapped in the opening between the split side rails of a long-term care electric bed.
