GRAPEFRUIT AND OTHER CITRUS FRUITS COULD TURN MEDICATIONS TOXIC

Here’s news to discuss with your doctor.  It seems eating grapefuit or drinking grapefruit juice can be dangerous if you’re taking certain prescription drugs.   A review in the Canadian Medical Association Journal says grapefruit juice can interact negatively with certain oral medications.

Pharmacology Professor Paul Doering says grapefruit contains a chemical that interferes with the way drugs are absorbed through the intestines, resulting in a potentially toxic dose of medication.  ”If the grapefruit juice is there first, it kind of takes hostage of the systems that get rid of the drug and activate them and allows more of the prescription medication to get into the system.”

Grapefruit is not the only citrus fruit which can create problems with medications.  Limes, pomelos and seville oranges used in marmalade can have similar effects.
