Another 27 minutes of sleep each night could guarantee success at school for your children or grandchildren. That’s the average amount of extra sleep McGill University researchers found that kids need to be more alert and focussed in school. Study author Reut Gruber says a modest extension in sleep duration was associated with significant improvement in alertness and emotional regulation, whereas a modest sleep restriction had opposite effects. 34 children took part in the study. They were between the ages of 7 and 11 with no behavioural, medial or academic issues. According to recent polls, an estimated two thirds of children between the ages of 6 and 12 go to bed later than 9pm and 4 in 10 boys ages 10 to 11 sleep less than the recommended 10 to 11 hours each night.
